2001 Bismark Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - 95
Opaque black hue. Huge aromas of date, fig, plum, new oak, coffee and a lightening vanilla note. Intense, though supple flavors of cherry, cranberry, plum, cedar and fruitcake spice. Lengthy close highlighted by cherry, mocha and coffee.

1997 Bismark Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - 90

On the palate, this thick, unctuously-textured Cabernet reveals sweet tannin…as well as a long, spicy, concentrated finish.

2001 Bismark Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel - 91

This dark purple wine unleashed an array of aromas , including dark berries, cedar, mild herbs, cassis, molasses, toasted oak, vanilla, and a hint of perfume. Pepper flavors roared alongside eucalyptus, dark berries, prunes, oak, vanilla and chocolate. This full-bodied wine “finished with a growl and then a meow that purred,” said one panelist. Others described the style as initially “hot” and “eye-popping” but eventually easing into “enjoyable.” Food Friendliness: Food helps tame those tannins on the finish. Go for big-game meats, “leg of anything,” rich beef or pork dishes or a heavy pasta dish.

2001 Bismark Mountain Vineyard Zinfandel - 90

Tasting 2001 California Zinfandels:

0.        Hanna Winery: 2001 Zinfandel Bismark Ranch - 90

0.        Hanna Winery: 2001 Zinfandel - 88

These are both big, serious, full-throttle offerings. The dark ruby-colored 2001 Zinfandel exhibits excellent ripeness along with abundant priery fruit, soil undertones, a hint of pepper, and a long, lusty, heady finish. Drink it over the next several years. Even richer is the muscular, opulent, thick, juicy 2001 Zinfandel Bismark Ranch (16.2% alcohol). This dense, chewy, exhuberant Zinfandel possesses enough acidity and extract to support its lofty alcohol. The finish is persistent. Consume it over the next 3-4 years.

Fewer than 1,500 cases of this rich, fruity, massive Zin. It's late harvest, California-style all the way…Defines style most classically.

The elevation is 1800-2000 feet in the Cabernet blocks. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted variety at Bismark, comprising 23 of the 60+ total planted acres.  The soils are non-existent to shallow, with white volcanic rhyolite predominating. The combination of these soils, intense sunlight, strong wind and moderate air temperature creates a distinct and powerful terroir. All vines are vertically trained. Vine spacing varies, depending on the slope.
