Ash Creek - Zinfandel
We have planted four acres of high-quality Zinfandel at 2,100 ft. elevation. This is the highest elevation Zinfandel in Sonoma County. The soil is quite shallow and turns into crushed red rock at 1.5 feet. The vines are very strong and healthy, cordon pruned, leaf thinned just after berry set up through the canopy for maximum sun exposure. There are 2,100 certified, heat treated, AXR-1 rootstock vines from Sonoma Grapevines and planted at 7 x 12 spacing. This vineyard is cordon pruned to better control the cluster/berry size, exposure and maturation. This procedure assures full uniform ripeness, color, and balanced complexities throughout the block. The field was ripped and fumigated prior to planting, the irrigation and fertigation is done through the drip system. Gary Farrell, Rabbit Ridge, and Yalumba have made wines from these grapes. Yalumba made a Zinfandel that took a Gold Medal at the Intervin Competition in LA and Wine Spectator named it one of the top Zinfandels of 1991. |
